Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 1,   Pages 53-60 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1851-y

Abstract: Based on the design of the fluorescent site of a fluorescent probe, we have created a unique system that changes its twisting response to sugar. Two probes were synthesized, in which phenylboronic acid and two kinds of aromatic fluorescent site (pyrene or anthracene) were conjugated by an amide bond. In the fluorescence measurement of pyrene-type probe , dimer fluorescence was observed at high pH. In induced circular dichroism (ICD) experiments, a response was observed only in the presence of glucose and -cyclodextrin, and no response was seen with fructose. On the other hand, in the fluorescence measurement of anthracene-type probe , dimer fluorescence was observed in the presence of both glucose and galactose, and the fluorescence was different from the case of fructose. When the ICD spectra of these inclusion complexes were measured, an inversion of the Cotton effect, which indicates a change in the twisted structure, was observed in galactose and glucose. These differences in response to monosaccharides may originate in the interaction between the fluorescent site and the cyclodextrin cavity.

Frontiers of Medicine 2020, Volume 14, Issue 4,   Pages 369-381 doi: 10.1007/s11684-020-0784-7

Abstract: Research into medical artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant advances in recent years, including surgical applications. This scoping review investigated AI-based decision support systems targeted at the intraoperative phase of surgery and found a wide range of technological approaches applied across several surgical specialties. Within the twenty-one ( =21) included papers, three main categories of motivations were identified for developing such technologies: (1) augmenting the information available to surgeons, (2) accelerating intraoperative pathology, and (3) recommending surgical steps. While many of the proposals hold promise for improving patient outcomes, important methodological shortcomings were observed in most of the reviewed papers that made it difficult to assess the clinical significance of the reported performance statistics. Despite limitations, the current state of this field suggests that a number of opportunities exist for future researchers and clinicians to work on AI for surgical decision support with exciting implications for improving surgical care.

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1018-y

Abstract: In this study, we modified a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow-fiber membrane element used for submerged membrane bioreactors (MBRs) to reduce the energy consumption during MBR processes. The high mechanical strength of the PTFE membrane made it possible to increase the effective length of the membrane fiber from 2 to 3 m. In addition, the packing density was increased by 20% by optimizing the membrane element configuration. These modifications improve the efficiency of membrane cleaning associated with aeration. The target of specific energy consumption was less than 0.4 kWh·m in this study. The continuous operation of a pilot MBR treating real municipal wastewater revealed that the MBR utilizing the modified membrane element can be stably operated under a specific air demand per membrane surface area (SAD ) of 0.13 m ·m ·hr when the daily-averaged membrane fluxes for the constant flow rate and flow rate fluctuating modes of operation were set to 0.6 and 0.5 m ·m ·d , respectively. The specific energy consumption under these operating conditions was estimated to be less than 0.37 kWh·m . These results strongly suggest that operating an MBR equipped with the modified membrane element with a specific energy consumption of less than 0.4 kWh·m is highly possible.

Anion-exchange membrane direct ethanol fuel cells: Status and perspective

T.S. Zhao, Y.S. Li, S.Y. Shen

Frontiers in Energy 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 443-458 doi: 10.1007/s11708-010-0127-5

Abstract: Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are a promising carbon-neutral and sustainable power source for portable, mobile, and stationary applications. However, conventional DEFCs that use acid proton-exchange membranes (typically Nafion type) and platinum-based catalysts exhibit low performance (i.e., the state-of-the-art peak power density is 79.5 mW/cm at 90°C). Anion-exchange membrane (AEM) DEFCs that use low-cost AEM and non-platinum catalysts have recently been demonstrated to yield a much better performance (i.e., the state-of-the-art peak power density is 160 mW/cm at 80°C). This paper provides a comprehensive review of past research on the development of AEM DEFCs, including the aspects of catalysts, AEMs, and single-cell design and performance. Current and future research challenges are identified along with potential strategies to overcome them.

New Year’s Message for 2022

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 1,   Pages 14-14 doi: 10.1007/s11783-022-1538-3

Abstract: 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of the journal of Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering (FESE). To date, FESE has received more than 5500 submissions from more than 80 countries and our acceptance rate is ~20%. FESE has also been providing a communication and development platform by increasing its editorial board, organizing conferences, and setting up awards. We are grateful for the support from authors, reviewers, readers, and editorial colleagues to jointly make FESE an internationally recognized journal in the Environmental Science and Engineering field. FESE is becoming an important and irreplaceable forum on environmental issues. Nowadays, environmental issues have attracted tremendous attention and they call for solutions to combat pollution, to achieve carbon neutrality, to tackle climate change, and to promote sustainable development. Accordingly, research is tackling more complex challenges and FESE is conveying knowledge and technological solutions to address these challenges. FESE will implement several new initiatives in 2022. First, FESE will further increase the quality of its publications and its services to the Environmental Science and Engineering community. Second, FESE will publish articles in a more timely fashion by publishing them on a monthly basis. Third, we will introduce a new article style, “Opinion,” that will broaden our perspectives and focus. Fourth, we have been launching the first Young Talent Award which will recognize promising investigators. 2022 will certainly be a year full of passion and expectations. Hereby, we hope that FESE will march toward a higher level with the hard work from editorial board members and editorial office, the continuous support from authors and reviewers, and the close collaborations among Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tsinghua University, Higher Education Press, Springer, and other organizations. Finally, we wish you all a happy, healthy, and fruitful 2022!

Exergy analysis and simulation of a 30MW cogeneration cycle

Nikhil Dev, Samsher, S. S. Kachhwaha, Rajesh Attri

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 169-180 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0263-9

Abstract:

Cogeneration cycle is an efficient mean to recover the waste heat from the flue gases coming out of gas turbine. With the help of computer simulation, design parameters may be selected for the best performance of cogeneration cycle. In the present work a program is executed in software EES on the basis of mathematical modelling described in paper to study cogeneration cycle performance for different parameters. Results obtained are compared with the results available in literature and are found in good agreement with them. Real gas and water properties are inbuilt in the software. Results show that enthalpy of air entering the combustion chamber is higher than that of the flue gases at combustion chamber outlet. For different operative conditions, energy and exergy efficiencies follow similar trends; although, exergy efficiency values are always lower than the corresponding energy efficiency ones. From the results it is found that turbine outlet temperature (TIT) of 524°C is uniquely suited to efficient cogeneration cycle because it enables the transfer of heat from exhaust gas to the steam cycle to take place over a minimal temperature difference. This temperature range results in the maximum thermodynamic availability while operating with highest temperature and highest efficiency cogeneration cycle. Effect of cycle pressure ratio (CR), inlet air temperature (IAT) and water pressure at heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) inlet on the 30 MW cogeneration cycle is also studied.
